Breaking Records! - Ike Reilly - Poison The Hit Parade

I believe that Poison the Hit Parade is Ike Reilly's sixth CD. After his first CD, 1992's "Community No. 9", I can't find any record of him doing anything for 9 years. While other Libertyville, IL residents moved to L.A. and formed such bands as Rage Against The Machine, Tool and Babes in Toyland, he stayed in Libertyville.

In 2001, Ike's major label debut "Salesmen and Racists" was released by Universal, but quickly went nowhere. Ike was dropped, and the album went out of print. After another delay, Ike regrouped and released 2004's "Sparkle in the Finish". It seems things have finally been clicking for him. What seem to be good sales, rave reviews, plenty of tours and a LOT of music (Poison the Hit Parade is his 4th album in 5 years).

While the album is still almost a month away, enjoy this early single, "Dragonflies".

Pick Of The Week:

Mike Patton - A Perfect Place
(DVD Short & CD Score)

This is bound to wind up as one of my favorite releases of the year. The film, A Perfect Place is a 20 minute short starring Mark Boone, Jr. (Batman Begins, 30 Days Of Night). It's a Jarmuschian tale of two people transporting a body to the perfect place to be buried. It's shot in gorgeous Black & White. The score, by Mike Patton is a genre-shifting work that belongs up there with Patton's best work.

This track is
Main Title, a Zorn-ish piece that plays over the opening titles.

Fanu/Bill Laswell - Lodge

I don't know anything about this CD, but it has the name Bill Laswell on it, so it is desired.

Kaki King - Dreaming Of Revenge

Billy Martin - Illy B Eats, Vol. 3

Presidents Of The United States - These Are Good Times People

Son Lux - At War with Walls and Mazes

Why? - Alopecia

Monthly Favorites - February 2008

Continuing the tone of the last two posts, I'm anxious just to catch up to the present here. Although, as far as monthly favorites are concerned, there's not much worth talking about. I still haven't heard the Marc Ribot or Roky Erickson, so there isn't a single new audio release in February that I enjoyed all the way through.

There aren't really any films I enjoyed that aren't fairly popular. I mean, popular enough to be nominated for Oscars (Jesse James, Gone Baby Gone, etc.) I guess I'd like to point out The Amateurs and Great World Of Sound, but that's about it.

OH! I almost forgot. I forgot to even LIST a film as a new release called The Inner Life Of Martin Frost.

This film is from one of my favorite authors, Paul Auster, who wrote the screenplays for Smoke, Blue in the Face and Lulu on the Bridge. He co-directed Smoke, and directed this and Lulu on the Bridge. I need to see this film again, but I can say that I enjoyed it very much.
