Short Film Of The Day - 2008.03.26 - The Auteur

The Auteur (2002)
by James Westby

When I noticed today that James Westby's feature film, The Auteur was going to finally have its World Premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, I knew that this had to be the Short Film Of The Day. This short film features director Arturo Domingo's giving a commentary track for his feature porn film, Requiem Of A Wet Dream.

Pick Of The Week:

The Heavy - Great Vengeance and Furious Fire

This is just a fantastic album. It's a Soul/R&B/Rock hybrid. Some heavy rock, some straight-out funk and even some softer ballads. It's almost like if Lenny Kravitz didn't suck.

A Silver Mt. Zion - 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons

B-52's - Funplex

Counting Crows - Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings

I never cared for Counting Crows, but I can't believe how much I disliked this CD.

Justin Townes Earle - The Good Life

This is the debut album of Steve Earle's son.

Elf Power - In a Cave

Firewind - The Premonition

I'm not big on Heavy Metal, but I found this pretty enjoyable.

Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple

Mike Oldfield - Music Of The Spheres

Panic At The Disco - Pretty. Odd.

Plants and Animals - Parc Avenue

Temple Of Soul - Brothers In Arms

Breaking Records! - The Black Angels - Directions to See a Ghost

The Black Angels' last album, 2006's Passover was a fantastic piece of psychedelic rock, and one of the best debut albums of the 2000s. On May 13th they'll be releasing their follow-up, Directions to See a Ghost. This track is called "You On The Run".

Pick Of The Week:

Wristcutters: A Love Story

Please pay no attention to this HORRIBLE DVD cover. This was one of the best movies of the year.

B.I.K.E.

Bad Meat

This is bound to be horrible, but I still want to see it for some reason.

Eve Of Understanding

Another film festival movie that is much better than the cover suggests.

Feast Of Death

James Ellroy is, obviously, the author of the fantastic L.A. Confidential.

Kite Runner

And that makes three horrible covers for pretty good movies. This was a little high on the melodrama, but I found the story somewhat compelling.

The Mist

This is worth a slight recommendation. It probably shouldn't be judged by the horrible CGI in the trailer. It was very creepy and disturbing, and had a decent ending.

P.T.U.

Saw this years ago and thought it was quite good.

Sasquatch Gang

If I had to pick a #2 for the week, this would be it. I saw this twice at various film festivals, and I thought it was great. Much better than Napoleon Dynamite, at any rate. But man....what a horrible cover!

Underbelly

This is a really interesting movie, and well worth a look. Unfortunately, it looks like the director is doing some sort of self-release, so it isn't on Netflix.
