2008.07.01
My Blueberry Nights
While not as strong as WKW's previous work, this is a decent film.
Sex and Death 101
Funny, entertaining film. From the director of Heathers. Stars Winona Rider and Patton Oswalt
Shotgun Stories
Summercamp!
Not up to director Bradley Beesley's previous docs, Okie Noodling and Fearless Freaks, but a decent documentary with a few shining moments.
Vantage Point
TV
30 Days - Season 2
Always recommended.
Reissue
Busy Body
I've been dying for a home video version of this since I first read the book a decade+ ago. Richard Pryor's first film roll.

New DVD Releases - 2008.06.24
2008.06.24
Pick Of The Week:
Persepolis
This was a top 10 for 2007.
10,000 B.C.
I had some pretty low expectations for this, and it easily sunk below all of them. Worst movie of the year so far.
Definitely Maybe
Didn't have much of an expectation for this, but it wound up being quite good.
Futurama: The Beast With A Billion Backs
I loved both of the Futurama movies so far. While I think I enjoy watching Futurama in shorter doses, it's hard to argue with the ability for them to create bigger, longer stories.
Honeydripper
Nice period piece from John Sayles. Not for everyone, but definitely recommended for anyone who likes blues music.
In Bruges
Highly recommended. Everyone in this is great.

Pick Of The Week
King Khan and the Shrines - The Supreme Genius of King Khan & the Shrines
Haven't had enough time to listen to this more, but it's great.
This track is "Took My Lady Out To Dinner"
Adem - Takes
Collection of acoustic/electronic covers. This split cover of Aphex Twin's "To Cure A Weakling Child" and "The Boy/Girl Song" is great.
Coldplay - Viva La Vida
I know I should get around to listening to this, I just haven't gotten there yet.
Nomo - Ghost Rock
This is a little more experimental and there are less horns than their last CD. I was disappointed.
Notwist - The Devil, You + Me
I haven't gotten around to this as much as I should have.
Silver Jews - Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea
Tilly and the Wall - o

Under The Same Moon
TV
Burn Notice-Season One
Californication-Season One
I've seen all but one of the films this week, and all the TV sets. All the TV sets are better than all the films. Good week for TV. All three of these shows are worth watching.

2008.06.04
VERY pressed for time this month, so I'm gonna hopefully pound out three release dates, mostly without pics/links
Pick Of The Week:
The Onion Movie
Yeah, it's a feature film made up of skits. It's a mixed bag. But some of it is damn funny. At least 10X funnier than that damn Semi-Pro.
A couple docs worth watching:
Big Rig
This is one of the reasons I didn't do this release date right away. I was waiting to watch this, thinking it would be pick of the week. This doc was at SXSW, and it was directed by Doug Pray (Scratch, Hype!). Unfortunately I didn't like it as much as those music docs.
Twisted: A Balloonamentary
Another doc about weird interests of people. Or the interests of weird people. Whichever.
Also:
The Animation Show, Vol. 3
Control
Machine Girl
Semi-Pro
Weeds - Season 3

My Music Collection - #
This is probably a really useless project, but whatever.
I've been getting my music collection all pulled together, and trying to create a text file of everything. I guess so I can reference it to see if I already have things before I re-rip/download/buy them.
So, here is mostly everything that begins with a #. Keep in mind that after 12 years working at a CD retail store, I've obviously accumulated a lot of albums that I wound up not liking.
I invite any and all conversation about what albums are great, which albums are horrible, and which albums not listed I need to hear.

The Black Angels - Directions To See A Ghost
A second fantastic album from The Black Angels. The track below is "You On The Run".
#2
Firewater - The Golden Hour
I'm so excited that after a five year hiatus in writing new music, Firewater has returned with a new album. Luckily in that time a lot of bands that have an ethnic feel have achieved some popularity, including Devotchka and Gogol Bordello. Hopefully that will mean some level of success for the new Firewater project.
The song below is called "Borneo", it is the first track on the new album. Below that you'll find a great youtube link that gives you an idea of what the album is about.

Pick Of The Week:
The Black Angels - Directions To See A Ghost
A second fantastic album from The Black Angels. The track below is "You On The Run".
Death Cab For Cutie - Narrow Stairs
DJ Spooky - Sound Unbound
I still always search out whatever DJ Spooky does, but I've definitely been pretty passive about a lot of his recent stuff, and this is a good reason why. This is just another DJ mix (with 43 songs represented!). I know I can't expect a DJ to create non-mix CDs every year, but I just think it's been too long since we've seen one from DJ Spooky.
Dave Douglas - Moonshine
Duffy - Rockferry
Filter - Anthems for the Damned
Local H - 12 Angry Months
Old 97's - Blame It On Gravity
Rufus Thomas - Tiger Man
I love Rufus Thomas. This CD is billed as "Earliest Recordings". Looking forward to hearing it.
